The Five-Times Rule for Communication

As a leader and parent, I’ve found that using models to understand the world around us can be incredibly helpful. I’ve developed a simple and effective model I call the Five-Times Rule, which can make all the difference when communicating with teams or even your kids.

What’s the problem?

In today’s fast-paced world, people are often overwhelmed with information and distractions, making it more challenging to capture their attention. As a result, it’s crucial not to underestimate the effort required for clear and concise communication.

The Five-Times Rule…

I assume that only 20% of the full message comes through with each communication attempt. Therefore, to achieve a full transfer of the message, it means I need to repeat it five times!

Is that really needed?

You may think this sounds like overkill but, it’s essential to listen carefully for what people understand and continuously refine your message to make it more relatable and clear. Be patient, persistent, and engaging in your communication efforts, and watch as your storytelling skills improve with each repetition.

So, the next time you’re struggling to get your point across, don’t assume that people will understand it after just one attempt. Remember to use my Five-Times Rule to communicate more effectively and see how it helps you to become a better leader and parent.
